El Canto de las Manos is a feature-length documentary directed by María Valverde and co-produced by Forty Entertainment and Quinchoncho. The film explores deafness through music, following Jennifer, Gabriel, and José, three deaf musicians from Venezuela, as they bring Beethoven’s Fidelio to the stage in sign language for the first time, under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel. The documentary delves into the challenges and emotions of this experience, offering a unique perspective on the connection between sound and silence.

The creative process was particularly enriching and full of challenges. We explored multiple visual directions before finding the best representation for the film. Since the documentary focuses on a frequently underrepresented community, it was crucial to develop a visual language that was both respectful and true to the essence of the project. Below, you can see some of the discarded concepts along the way, reflecting the ongoing search to convey the story’s message with the sensitivity it required.
